A ‘transnational collaborative project’ is a pluriannual project in which several teams from different countries participate. While each team is funded by its respective national/regional funding agency, the teams implement a research project with common objectives in a collaborative approach.
The F.R.S.-FNRS supports transnational collaborative research through its participation in different tools such as:
- the ERA-NETs,
- the joint programming
ERA-Net
The European Union supports the coordination of national research programmes on a European scale through ERA-NETs networks. They are national funding agencies which participate directly in these networks. They organise calls for tender for transnational research projects, which enable researchers from different countries participating in the call to implement collaborative research projects. In HORIZON 2020, the European Commission cofinances 33% of these research projects through the instrument which is now known as ERA-Net COFUND.
Currently, the F.R.S.-FNRS participates in the following ERA-NETs (FP7):

Joint Programming
Joint programming is an instrument which enables Member States of the European Union and associated states to pool their research programmes on major societal stakes, the themes of which are defined from a national consultation and finalised by the Council of European ministers.
This tool should contribute to limiting the costs linked to fragmentation and unnecessary duplication in research in order to improve the profitability of research programmes and the efficiency of public resources.
The Joint Programming represents for the F.R.S.-FNRS an opportunity to pool its resources through a multilateral partnership, for example within the context of joint calls for tender or other joint actions.
The F.R.S.-FNRS follows all 10 ongoing Joint programming initiatives (JPI) and participates in certain joint calls for tender:
- Neurodegenerative Diseases (Alzheimer’s)
- Agriculture, food security and climate change
- Cultural Heritage and Global Change: a new challenge for Europe
- A healthy diet for a healthy life
- Connecting Climate Knowledge for Europe – Clik’EU
- More years, better lives – The potential and challenges of demographic changes
- Water challenges for a changing world
- The microbial challenge – An emerging threat to human health
- Healthy and productive seas and oceans
- Urban Europe: Global challenges – Local solutions
All the JPI calls for tender in which the FNRS participates are open to researchers from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
